Jamie Carragher has added a new layer to the debate over Mohamed Salah’s future, suggesting the Liverpool forward may remain in European football after leaving Anfield at the end of the 2025-26 season rather than move to Saudi Arabia at this stage. His comments came as speculation intensified following Salah’s confirmed decision to bring his Liverpool spell to a close this summer.

Reports published on Thursday said Carragher believes Salah still has the drive to compete at the highest level in Europe, with Italy framed as a plausible destination in his view. The significance of that reading is not that it points to a completed deal or active negotiations, but that it reflects a football judgment about a player who may still see elite competition as the priority in the next phase of his career.

What is confirmed is Salah’s departure from Liverpool at the end of the season, ending a remarkable chapter that began with his arrival from Roma in 2017. Since then, he has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances and helped the club win major honours including the Premier League and the Champions League, cementing his status as one of Liverpool’s defining modern-era players.

Beyond that, the picture remains open. Salah has long been linked with Saudi clubs, and those links resurfaced quickly after his exit announcement. Even so, no next destination has been formally announced. Reports citing his agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, have also stressed that Salah’s next club is not yet known, underlining that much of the current discussion remains speculative.

That is why Carragher’s view is best understood as an informed reading of Salah’s competitive mindset rather than a transfer development in itself. Until Salah or his representatives reveal the next step, his future will remain one of the most closely watched stories of the coming transfer window.
