A group of leading central bank chiefs issued a rare joint statement on Tuesday declaring “full solidarity” with U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome H. Powell and stressing that central bank independence is a cornerstone of price, financial, and economic stability.
The statement was published on the European Central Bank’s website and signed by ECB President Christine Lagarde, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem and other central bank leaders, alongside senior officials from the Bank for International Settlements.
The move comes amid an escalating dispute in Washington, linked to investigations and threats involving Powell following his congressional testimony on the cost of renovations at the Fed’s buildings.
