Colombia secured the final spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Ghana in Kansas City, setting up a major knockout clash with Switzerland in Vancouver.
Reuters reported that Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute, giving Colombia an early lead that proved enough to keep their World Cup campaign alive. The match was played in hot conditions, with Colombia relying on discipline, defensive control and strong crowd support to protect the advantage until the final whistle.
The winning goal came after Colombia were forced into an early attacking change following an injury to Jhon Cordoba. Luis Suarez came on and quickly made an impact, delivering the cross that allowed Arias to finish calmly inside the area.
Colombia had chances to extend the lead, while Luis Diaz also saw a second-half goal ruled out for offside. Ghana pushed late in the match, but Colombia held firm and avoided the kind of late drama that has defined several knockout games in the tournament.
For Ghana, the result ended a promising World Cup run. Reuters quoted head coach Carlos Queiroz as saying the team’s exit was linked to a lack of maturity and calm under pressure, while acknowledging that Colombia were the better side on the night.
The result gives Vancouver another high-profile World Cup moment. Colombia will now face Switzerland on Tuesday, July 7, at BC Place. The Vancouver FIFA World Cup 2026 schedule lists the Round of 16 match for 1 p.m. Pacific Time, 4 p.m. Eastern Time.
Switzerland enter the match with confidence after defeating Algeria 2-0 in Vancouver, with goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye. Reuters described that result as Switzerland’s first World Cup knockout-stage win since 1938, adding historical weight to their next test against Colombia.
The Vancouver match now brings together two teams riding strong momentum: a Colombian side that showed patience and resilience against Ghana, and a Swiss team that has just broken a long knockout-stage barrier. For Canadian fans, it is another chance to see the World Cup’s decisive rounds unfold on home soil.
