Egypt Face Belgium at the World Cup as the Pharaohs Chase a Historic First Win

Egypt begins their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on Monday with a major test against Belgium in Group G, in a match that carries more than the value of three points. For the Pharaohs, the opener is tied to a long-standing historical question: can Egypt finally secure its first-ever win at the World Cup?
The match will be played in Seattle, where Belgium and Egypt open their group-stage journey. FIFA’s match centre lists the fixture for June 15, 2026, in Seattle, while Lumen Field also identifies Belgium vs Egypt as one of the city’s World Cup group-stage matches.
Egypt enters the tournament with the eyes of a nation fixed on Mohamed Salah. The Guardian described Egypt’s campaign as a chance to end a 92-year wait, noting that despite the country’s rich African football history, Egypt remain without a World Cup victory in their previous appearances.
This is not only Salah’s tournament. Omar Marmoush also gives Egypt another important attacking weapon, adding pace, movement, and directness alongside the national team captain. Yahoo Sports’ Group G preview noted that Egypt are led by Salah and Marmoush and may be able to compete in a group where Belgium are the clear favourite, but the race behind them looks more open.
Belgium, however, arrive with experience and expectation. Kevin De Bruyne is entering what Reuters described as his fourth World Cup, and he spoke ahead of the Egypt match about enjoying this stage of his international career with more perspective and maturity. His reunion with Salah also adds another layer to the fixture, given their long history in English football.
For Egypt, the challenge is clear. Belgium are likely to control possession and try to impose the rhythm of the match, while Egypt’s best route may be defensive discipline, patience, and quick transitions through Salah and Marmoush. Against a team with Belgium’s quality, small moments could decide everything: a counterattack, a set piece, a goalkeeper’s save, or one perfectly timed pass.
The psychological side may be just as important as the tactical one. Egypt are not entering this World Cup simply to take part. The team, led by coach Hossam Hassan, carries the pressure of a football country that has waited too long for one defining World Cup moment. Reuters previously noted that Egypt are still chasing their first World Cup win, with Salah remaining central to their hopes.
A draw against Belgium would be useful. A win would be historic. In a group that also includes Iran and New Zealand, every point matters, and Egypt’s opening result could shape the entire campaign.
The bottom line: Egypt’s match against Belgium is not just a difficult opener. It is a chance to rewrite a painful line in the country’s football history. For Salah, Marmoush, and this generation of Egyptian players, Monday’s game offers something bigger than a strong performance. It offers the possibility of a first World Cup victory that millions of Egyptians have waited decades to see.
