The Canadian Egyptian Heritage Association is preparing to host Egyptian actress Elham Shahin at a cultural and artistic evening in Mississauga on July 25, as part of its programme marking Egyptian Heritage Month in Canada.
The event will highlight Shahin’s long career in film and television and offer audiences an opportunity to hear directly from the acclaimed actress about her artistic journey, the social role of cinema, and the relationship between culture and identity.
The evening is being positioned as one of the main events of the association’s July programme, which combines cultural discussions, artistic performances, entertainment and community activities designed to present Egyptian heritage in a contemporary and accessible way.
The Canadian Egyptian Heritage Association (CEHA) was founded in March 2019 as a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving Egyptian heritage in Canada for current and future generations.
Its mission focuses on ensuring that Canadian Egyptian heritage continues to be celebrated from one generation to the next, while encouraging younger Canadians of Egyptian origin to remain connected to their cultural roots.
The association’s work also reflects the growing presence of Egyptian Canadians in Ontario. Approximately 100,000 people of Egyptian origin live in the province, forming active communities and contributing to medicine, engineering, education, aviation, nuclear energy, pharmacy, business and many other fields.
Official recognition of July as Egyptian Heritage Month followed the passage of Ontario’s Egyptian Heritage Month Act, 2019, creating an annual opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Egyptian Canadians and introduce the wider public to Egypt’s cultural and historical legacy.
Since its establishment, CEHA has organized and supported cultural, artistic and community events featuring public figures, officials and speakers from Canada and Egypt. Its programmes aim to strengthen cultural exchange, support diversity and multiculturalism, and increase awareness of the Egyptian community’s contribution to Canadian society.
Dr. Magdy Neshat, Chair of the Canadian Egyptian Heritage Association, invited residents across Canada to participate in this year’s activities, describing the programme as a varied celebration featuring cultural seminars, artistic performances and social events.
The Elham Shahin evening will take place at the German Canadian Club Hansa Haus in Mississauga and will include a public conversation, dinner and refreshments.
Through the event, the association seeks to demonstrate that celebrating heritage is not limited to preserving memories of the past, but also involves recognizing the continuing role of Egyptian Canadians in shaping the cultural and social life of Canada.
