A felt earthquake rattled Ottawa and western Quebec on Tuesday afternoon, after Earthquakes Canada recorded a magnitude 3.9 event near Shawville, Que., at 12:36:42 p.m. EDT and at a depth of 13 kilometres. Official data places the epicentre about 20 kilometres northeast of Shawville.
The tremor was felt across Ottawa, Gatineau and broader parts of eastern Ontario and western Quebec, with local reporting saying Earthquakes Canada received thousands of public reports from people who noticed the shaking. As of the latest reporting Tuesday, no injuries had been reported.
The incident is a reminder that eastern Ontario and western Quebec sit within an active seismic zone, even if damaging earthquakes remain relatively uncommon in the region.
