The World Cup match between Egypt and Iran has moved beyond football after both national federations objected to Pride-related activities and symbols around their Group G clash in Seattle. The match coincides with Seattle’s annual Pride Weekend, creating a sensitive dispute between local organizers, FIFA, and two participating countries with conservative legal and social positions on LGBTQ+ issues.

According to Reuters, FIFA confirmed that fans will be allowed to bring rainbow flags into the stadium for the Egypt-Iran match at Lumen Field on Friday, June 26, 2026. FIFA said the World Cup is an inclusive event and that general human-rights expressions, including rainbow flags and flags representing sexual orientation and gender identity, are permitted inside stadiums as long as they comply with the tournament’s stadium code of conduct.

Egypt and Iran had objected after the World Cup draw, with Egypt’s football association saying Pride-related activities conflicted with cultural and religious values. AP reported that both countries asked for the celebrations to be cancelled, but FIFA has not moved to ban rainbow flags or stop Seattle’s local Pride programming.

FIFA has also stressed that the Pride-related events are organized locally in Seattle and are not official FIFA programming. Seattle’s local World Cup organizing website lists Pride Match Day as part of the city’s wider Pride Weekend activities, with an advisory council created to guide related community initiatives.

The football stakes are also high. Egypt and Iran meet on June 26 at Lumen Field in Seattle, with kickoff listed at 8 p.m. Pacific Time, 11 p.m. Eastern Time, in a decisive Group G match.
