The French publication of Al-Thawb by Kuwaiti novelist Taleb Alrefai marks a notable step in the movement of Arabic fiction toward European readers. The novel has been released by Actes Sud, a French publishing house known for its engagement with Arabic literature, in a translation by Luc Barbulesco under the title L’Impossible roman de l’honorable monsieur K. The news was published on March 24, 2026, placing it among the week’s notable literary developments.
This is more than a routine translation release. First published in Arabic in 2009, the novel draws on autofiction and explores the uneasy relationship between literature, money, and authorship. Reports also note that Actes Sud has previously published other translated works by Alrefai, reinforcing his ongoing presence in the French-language literary space.
