Iran Warning Raises Risk in Southern Lebanon

Regional tensions have entered a more dangerous phase after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned that any renewed U.S. attack on Iran could push the conflict beyond the Middle East, while fighting continues in southern Lebanon and Israel reports new military losses there.

The Iranian warning followed remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said he had come close to resuming strikes on Iran before giving diplomacy more time. The warning comes as talks remain stalled and Tehran continues to press broad demands, including U.S. troop withdrawals from areas near Iran, sanctions relief, and an end to maritime restrictions linked to the Strait of Hormuz.

The escalation shows how the crisis is moving beyond a narrow U.S.-Iran negotiation and into a wider regional confrontation involving Gulf energy routes, southern Lebanon, Israel, Hezbollah, and fragile ceasefire efforts.

In southern Lebanon, the Israeli military announced that reserve Major Itamar Sapir, 27, was killed in combat, according to Israeli media citing the army. Israeli reports also said operations against Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon were continuing amid ongoing exchanges and battlefield activity.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry said Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon killed at least 19 people, including women and children, in attacks on several towns. Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah infrastructure, while humanitarian concerns continue to grow over civilian casualties, displacement, and the worsening situation in southern villages.

The latest developments place southern Lebanon at the centre of a wider regional equation, where Tehran’s warnings, Washington’s military pressure, Israeli operations, and Hezbollah’s calculations all intersect with fears over navigation, energy supplies, and broader regional stability.

For now, the room for containment remains narrow. With Iran warning of a wider confrontation, fighting continuing in southern Lebanon, and the U.S. military option still on the table, the region faces a highly sensitive moment in which a new strike could trigger a broader escalation.
