A member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts said on Sunday, March 8, 2026, that the body responsible for selecting the next supreme leader had reached a majority consensus on a candidate to succeed Ali Khamenei, while some procedural issues still remain before a formal announcement. Reuters, citing Iran’s Mehr news agency, reported that Ayatollah Mohammadmehdi Mirbaqeri said “some obstacles” were still pending in the process.
According to the same reporting, the remaining disagreement concerns how the final decision should be completed, including whether a full in-person meeting of the assembly is required or whether the process can be finalized through another mechanism under current security conditions. Reuters also said the head of the assembly secretariat, Ayatollah Hashem Hosseini Bushehri, is expected to announce the decision once the final arrangements are complete.
As of the latest reporting published today, the candidate’s name has not been disclosed, which means the current development is a majority internal consensus rather than a final official public announcement of the next supreme leader.
