The president of World Athletics said moving track and field into the first week of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics could benefit the sport by putting it in the spotlight earlier and building on the opening-ceremony buzz.
Reuters reported the schedule switch is linked to venue logistics at SoFi Stadium, which will host opening-ceremony elements before being converted into the swimming arena, pushing athletics to begin at the LA Memorial Coliseum the day after the ceremony.
He said the upside is stronger early visibility, while noting the first days will require tight operational readiness to avoid early organizational hiccups.
