Loblaw Changes Shelf Signage to Give Shoppers Clearer Product Information

Loblaw said Wednesday it will restore country of origin information in fresh produce sections and bring back the "T" symbol on selected U.S. products affected by tariffs, following consumer complaints calling for clearer information about where grocery items come from.

The company said the "T" symbol will gradually appear on products sourced directly from the United States and affected by tariffs as items are identified and shelf labels are updated. Loblaw previously introduced the symbol when Canada imposed counter tariffs on U.S. goods in March 2025.

Loblaw will also continue using its maple leaf symbol to help shoppers identify products made or prepared in Canada. The decision follows complaints on social media about country of origin information disappearing from some Loblaw owned stores as interest in buying Canadian products grows again.

The labels provide different information. Country of origin identifies where fresh produce comes from, while Loblaw's maple leaf is used for goods made or prepared in Canada. Products prepared in Canada can still contain imported ingredients. The "T" symbol identifies directly sourced U.S. products affected by tariffs.

The changes come ahead of a new round of Canadian counter tariffs scheduled to take effect September 8, meaning shoppers could begin seeing the tariff symbol on a wider range of affected U.S. goods, including some food products.

For consumers, the changes bring the trade dispute directly to the grocery shelf, providing clearer information about where an item comes from, whether it was made or prepared in Canada, and whether tariffs affect a U.S. product.
