Meta to retire Messenger.com and move web messaging back into Facebook

Meta is ending the standalone web version of Messenger, shifting browser-based messaging away from Messenger.com and back into Facebook’s own messaging interface. According to the company’s help guidance, the change starts in April 2026, after which users on desktop will be redirected to facebook.com/messages to continue their conversations.
The update does not mean Messenger is being shut down entirely. What is going away is the standalone website for web messaging, while the Messenger mobile app remains available. Users who want to keep using Messenger on a computer will do so through Facebook, and users without a Facebook account will still be able to continue their conversations on the mobile app.
The move follows Meta’s earlier decision to discontinue Messenger’s standalone desktop apps for Windows and Mac, which were taken offline in December 2025. In practical terms, Meta is consolidating Messenger into fewer platforms rather than shutting the service down altogether.
