A Mississauga animal cruelty investigation is drawing local attention after Peel Regional Police charged a city man with 134 counts following the rescue of dozens of kittens and adult cats.
According to CityNews Toronto, police opened the investigation after Animal Welfare Services reported multiple incidents involving kittens allegedly sold in distressing conditions and later dying from their injuries shortly after being taken to new homes. The report was published on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
Police said investigators executed a search warrant on April 23 and rescued 57 kittens and eight adult cats. The animals were taken to an animal rescue centre for urgent veterinary care.
Qiang Yu, 38, of Mississauga, has been charged with 134 counts of causing unnecessary suffering to animals under the Criminal Code of Canada. The charges have not been tested in court, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Police said the animals are now in the care and custody of the Mississauga animal shelter, where they will remain pending the judicial outcome. Police also said no other animals are outstanding in connection with the investigation.
The case highlights concerns around buying pets online, especially when young animals are offered for sale without clear health records, reliable seller information, or visible evidence of proper care.
Although the story is local to Mississauga and Peel Region, it carries a strong human-interest and public-awareness angle for families and pet owners across Ontario.
