Morocco Keeps Making History With a 40-Match Unbeaten Run

Morocco has written another remarkable chapter in football history, extending its unbeaten run to 40 consecutive matches and strengthening its place among the most consistent national teams in the world.
The latest milestone came in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, where Morocco held the Netherlands to a 1-1 draw after extra time before winning 3-2 on penalties. The result sent the Atlas Lions into the last 16 and set up a high-profile meeting with co-hosts Canada in Houston.
The achievement is about more than one knockout victory. Before the Netherlands match, Morocco had already been reported to have reached a 39-match unbeaten streak, surpassing major historical runs by Italy and Argentina. By avoiding defeat against the Dutch, Morocco extended that run further, turning a strong record into a defining football statement.
Against the Netherlands, Morocco showed the qualities that have shaped this generation: discipline, patience, resilience, and the ability to survive pressure in decisive moments. Cody Gakpo gave the Dutch the lead in the second half, but Morocco responded late through Issa Diop, forcing extra time and then penalties.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou once again proved decisive on the biggest stage, while Ismael Saibari converted the winning penalty to complete a dramatic night for Moroccan football.
This run also reflects a deeper transformation. Morocco is no longer viewed as a surprise team or a one-tournament story. After becoming the first Arab and African nation to reach a World Cup semifinal in 2022, the Atlas Lions have continued to build a team identity based on tactical maturity, technical quality, and strong belief.
Under coach Mohamed Ouahbi, Morocco has also shown a more ambitious attacking approach, with greater confidence in possession and a stronger willingness to take control of matches. The team’s evolution has made it one of the most compelling sides of the 2026 World Cup.
As Morocco prepares to face Canada in the Round of 16, the message is clear: the Atlas Lions are not just defending a record. They are building a new football era.
Forty matches unbeaten is not only a number. It is a statement of consistency, character, and a national team that continues to earn respect on the world stage.
