Ontario Schools Begin New Year With Major Grading Changes

Ontario students are entering the 2026-27 school year under several major changes affecting kindergarten, secondary-school grading, final examinations and a new financial-literacy graduation requirement.
For the first time, attendance and participation will form part of final secondary-school grades. They will account for 15% of marks in Grades 9 and 10 and 10% in Grades 11 and 12. Excused absences will not reduce a student’s mark.
Most high-school courses will also require written final examinations during designated exam periods as Ontario introduces a more standardized approach to assessment across Grades 9 through 12.
Students who began Grade 9 in 2025-26 or later must also meet a new financial-literacy graduation requirement. It is completed through the compulsory Grade 10 Career Studies course, requires a score of at least 70%, and gives students two attempts during the course. The result counts for 5% of the Career Studies final grade.
Kindergarten is also changing. Ontario’s new 2026 curriculum replaces the 2016 program and places increased emphasis on foundational literacy and mathematics while maintaining play- and inquiry-based learning.
