Canadians are reporting slightly higher levels of happiness in 2026, with the national Happiness Index rising to 70.5 out of 100 from 68.7 last year, according to a large Léger survey.
Quebec ranked as Canada’s happiest province at 74.5, followed by Newfoundland and Labrador at 71.0 and New Brunswick at 70.3. Most provinces improved compared with 2025.
Among Canada’s largest cities, Montreal ranked first at 72.7, followed by Brampton at 71.7 and Toronto at 69.4. Brampton recorded the largest year-over-year improvement among the 10 largest cities.
One-quarter of Canadian respondents said their happiness improved over the past year, while 23% said it declined and 52% reported no change. Family, personal life and health were among the strongest contributors to well-being, while financial pressure and affordability continued to weigh on respondents.
Léger surveyed 63,710 Canadian adults online between June 9 and 29 and weighted the results by age, gender and region.
