The federal government and the government of Ontario have announced a new funding package worth $228.8 million over three years to support workers affected by tariffs and global market disruptions, with an estimated 27,000 workers expected to benefit across the province.

The funding will be delivered through the Canada-Ontario Workforce Tariff Response initiative, which will operate through Ontario’s existing employment and training services, alongside the Skills Advance Ontario program. The plan focuses on helping workers retrain, gain new skills, or remain in the workforce as conditions change across key industries.

The program primarily targets workers in the softwood lumber, steel, and automotive sectors, as well as industries indirectly affected by supply chain disruptions and trade pressures.

The support will also extend to unemployed workers, employees whose companies participate in work-sharing arrangements, and workers who need additional training to remain in their jobs or transition to new employment opportunities.

The announcement comes as several industrial sectors in Ontario face increasing pressure from tariffs and global trade fluctuations, prompting both governments to focus on retraining and workforce adjustment programs aimed at supporting jobs and maintaining labour market stability.
