Pope Leo on Sunday, March 8, 2026, called for an end to the bombing in Iran and across the Middle East and urged renewed efforts to open space for dialogue, warning that the violence could spread to other countries in the region, including Lebanon. Speaking during the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, he said the news coming from Iran and the wider region was deeply troubling and called for weapons to fall silent so that the voices of peoples could be heard.
Reuters reported that the Vatican appeal came on the ninth day of the war, amid rising fears that continued bombing was fuelling a wider climate of fear and hatred. The report added that the Vatican’s top diplomat had criticized the legality of the military campaign and warned against the logic of “preventive wars,” in an unusually direct response from the Holy See.
