Study: PM2.5 exposure during pregnancy may be linked to lower birth weight

A large study published in a scientific journal found that higher exposure to fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) during pregnancy was associated with lower birth weight for gestational age.
The findings also pointed to “sensitive windows,” with stronger associations observed from early pregnancy through mid-pregnancy, while patterns varied by region and local conditions.
Researchers said the results highlight how reducing exposure to air pollution—where possible—may support maternal and fetal health through practical steps such as checking daily air-quality levels and limiting outdoor activity on high-pollution days.
