Qatar earned a valuable 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their opening Group B match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after a dramatic stoppage-time moment gave the team a historic point.
Switzerland took the lead in the 17th minute through a Breel Embolo penalty, but Qatar equalized in the 94th minute from a ball played by Boualem Khoukhi under defensive pressure before it found the net after Miro Muheim’s intervention. Some reports described the incident as an own goal, while others highlighted Khoukhi’s decisive header.
Switzerland had the clearer control and more attempts, but Qatar stayed alive until the final whistle and turned defensive patience into an important result. The draw leaves Group B wide open, with Qatar, Switzerland, Canada, and Bosnia and Herzegovina all level on one point after the first round.
From a tactical perspective, Switzerland will see this as two points dropped, while Qatar can treat it as a major psychological boost before facing Canada.
