Rare Chinese Visit to Ottawa Tests Canada Beijing Reset

Wang’s schedule includes meetings with Anand and Carney in Ottawa, according to The Canadian Press. The visit follows Carney’s trip to China earlier this year, where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping as Ottawa sought to rebuild channels of communication with one of the world’s most influential economies.
For Canada, the visit is not only a diplomatic gesture. It is a practical test of whether a more active dialogue with Beijing can produce economic benefits while preserving Canada’s security interests and democratic values.
The talks are expected to focus on bilateral relations, trade, investment, global security, and the implementation of an updated Canada China strategic partnership. Those issues place the visit at the centre of Canada’s broader effort to diversify international trade and reduce its vulnerability to global economic shocks.
The Canadian Press reported that Canada and China reached a preliminary trade understanding after Carney’s earlier visit to China, including movement on some Chinese tariffs affecting Canadian agricultural products and Canadian tariffs on certain Chinese electric vehicles.
Still, any reset with Beijing remains politically delicate. Canadian officials face pressure to protect national security, support human rights, and respond firmly to concerns about foreign interference, while businesses and exporters are watching for signs of improved market access and lower trade friction.
The Ottawa visit therefore sends a dual message. China appears ready to reopen a senior political channel with Canada, while the Carney government is testing whether engagement with Beijing can be managed with caution, discipline, and clear Canadian interests.
