Heavy rain, powerful winds, and severe thunderstorms swept across Edmonton and surrounding areas, leaving flooded streets, fallen trees, road closures, and widespread disruptions as emergency crews worked to respond across the city.
The storm struck Friday evening, bringing intense rainfall in a short period that overwhelmed drainage systems and turned several major roads into temporary waterways. Videos shared by residents showed vehicles struggling through deep floodwaters while emergency responders were dispatched to multiple incidents.
City officials confirmed that crews responded to reports of flooded roadways, downed trees, and traffic disruptions throughout Edmonton. Several streets were temporarily closed as workers cleared debris and assessed storm damage.
Strong wind gusts also brought down large trees in residential neighborhoods, blocking roads and damaging property in some areas. Authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay clear of fallen trees and power lines, and report hazards through Edmonton's 311 service.
The severe weather also affected public facilities and outdoor events, with localized flooding forcing temporary closures at some locations. Officials continue to monitor conditions as cleanup operations remain underway.
Environment and Climate Change Canada had issued severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of central Alberta before the storm moved through the Edmonton region, warning of heavy rainfall, damaging wind gusts, and large hail.
