Spain have been crowned FIFA World Cup 2026 champions after defeating Argentina 1-0 in a dramatic final that required extra time at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford.

The match remained goalless throughout regulation time before substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, firing Spain to their second men’s World Cup title and their first since 2010.

Spain controlled possession and created the better opportunities, but Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez produced a remarkable performance, making 12 saves to keep the defending champions in contention until extra time.

Argentina continued to search for an equalizer after falling behind, but Spain’s disciplined defence protected the narrow advantage and brought Lionel Messi’s hopes of winning consecutive World Cups to an emotional end.

The victory completed an exceptional tournament for Spain, who conceded only one goal across eight matches—the fewest ever allowed by a World Cup-winning team. Midfielder Rodri was also awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.

Spain’s triumph also made the country the first nation to hold the men’s and women’s World Cup titles simultaneously, following the Spanish women’s national team’s victory in 2023.

For Argentina, the defeat ended their attempt to defend the title they won in Qatar in 2022. For Spain, the night marked a return to the summit of world football and confirmed a new generation as global champions.
