Several national teams are now at risk of missing the 2026 World Cup following a decision by former U.S. President Donald Trump to impose new travel and asylum restrictions. These measures could indirectly affect sports teams from countries facing difficulties obtaining U.S. visas.
According to a report by The Guardian, players and coaching staff from countries with political tensions with the United States may face travel difficulties to the U.S., particularly after Trump’s announcement of tougher asylum policies and additional travel restrictions.
These restrictions come at a critical time, with World Cup qualifying matches just around the corner, as the tournament will be hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. This could jeopardize the participation of teams from Latin America and the Middle East, among others.
FIFA’s concerns are growing, as some teams may refuse to participate if these restrictions remain in place, potentially reducing representation from significant regions. FIFA officials have expressed hope that diplomatic solutions will be found to ease travel for all teams ahead of the tournament.
