A Short Story by Omayma Abdelaziz

A dreamy woman, never rebellious by nature, lived a quiet life on the surface. To the world, she seemed gentle, almost fragile. But behind that thin veil of still water lived a rushing waterfall of feeling, and from that current her pen became an artist’s brush, shaping images out of words that could breach fortresses and brush against the heart.

She was a mature woman, no longer moved by the ordinary flattery that once stirred others, until she met him. With his words, he slipped past her defenses. She opened the gates of her inner stronghold and welcomed him like a victorious king, placed a crown upon his head, and seated him on the throne of her heart. For all her independence, she had still hungered for the whisper of emotion after long years ruled by silence.

He was a fellow writer, someone she had met at a literary salon. He was generous with advice, and at first she received it with warmth and gratitude. His attention pleased her. His guidance felt like care. But as time passed, his criticism began to wound rather than build. A distance grew between her and her pen, until the pen itself seemed to suffocate in her hand, and every word became something she feared before she dared to write it.

Then the confessions stopped. Dust gathered on her notebooks. She fell into a long sleep of the spirit and became a woman carrying the weariness of ninety years in her heart, as though she had cast her creativity and tenderness into a home for the abandoned.

Still, he never missed a chance to reproach her for changing, for becoming, in his eyes, a woman gone idle after once being so alive with talent, never knowing that he himself stood behind the crime: the deliberate murder of a pen.

One morning, a friend called and invited her on an outing with old companions.

Before the day was over, life was moving through her veins again. Something in her old brightness returned. She remembered who she had once been, and for one whole day the weight of the present disappeared. It was a spark, and that spark lit the dark chambers of her soul.

She returned to him. He received her with the same old coldness, busy with his own brilliance, intoxicated by admiration for himself. What she had once ignored now fed the ember of defiance inside her. Every gesture, every word, deepened the fire.

So she made her decision. She would release her pen and free it from its chains.

She brushed the dust from her notebooks and let her heart pour itself onto the page. Words rushed back in their thousands, and with every line she lifted the fears that had buried creation in its cradle.

Then he came, calm as ever, extending his hand as though to begin the execution. But she pulled her pages back and held them to her chest. In silence, she looked at him, and in that look a bitter conversation flared, one that revealed everything her silence had concealed.

He tried once more to arrest her rebellion. With his words, he handed her the final key to the chains he had long used to bind her, claiming that her past success had been his doing, born of his guidance and his authority over her work.

That was the end of the cold war between them.

She stepped out of his orbit after he had torn down his own fortress with the tools of his vanity and deceit.

She returned to her pen and held it close. She made of it a steed whose reins belonged to no one but her own fingertips. For it is an injustice to imprison the soul, and an act of arrogance to ask a human being to bow, to accept ظلم, and to live in the chains of surrender.
