Toronto to New York by Train: A Daily Route Through Niagara and the Hudson Valley

As summer travel picks up, attention is returning to one of the most scenic ground travel options between Canada and the United States: Amtrak’s Maple Leaf train, a daily service linking Toronto and New York City.

The route runs between Toronto Union Station and Moynihan Train Hall in New York, with major stops including Niagara Falls, Syracuse, and Albany. Amtrak lists the trip at about 12 hours and 30 minutes and describes the route as passing through the Hudson River Valley, New York wine country, the Finger Lakes region, and Niagara Falls, where the train crosses the Canada U.S. border.

For travellers, the appeal is not only transportation. The train offers a slower, more scenic alternative to flying or driving, taking passengers from the heart of Toronto toward Manhattan while making the journey itself part of the travel experience.

VIA Rail also lists the Toronto Niagara Falls New York route in its schedules, while VIA’s Amtrak page directs travellers to book Amtrak tickets for travel from Toronto to New York.

Passengers should plan carefully because this is an international trip, not a domestic ride. Travellers need to confirm passport, visa, and entry-document requirements before departure. Amtrak’s border guidance also notes that having the required documents does not guarantee entry, as admission remains at the discretion of customs and immigration officers.

For Toronto travellers, the train may suit those who want a calmer journey, prefer to avoid airports, or want to arrive closer to central Manhattan. It is not the fastest option, but it may be the more relaxed one for passengers who value comfort and scenery over speed.

The practical advice is simple: book early, check the latest schedule before travelling, allow extra time for border processing, and do not assume the trip duration will be identical every day.
