U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, saying Canada "should be grateful" to the United States and adding: "Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements," Reuters reported.
In Canada, Ontario Premier Doug Ford called Trump’s remarks "unacceptable." Ford also said an altered image showing the U.S. flag covering Canada and Greenland was "unacceptable," warning that such messaging adds to tension and uncertainty.
Trump’s comments came a day after Carney’s Davos address, in which he warned of a "rupture" in the rules-based international order. Carney said major powers were increasingly using economic integration as leverage and that tariffs had become an instrument of pressure, without naming Trump or the United States, according to Reuters.
Trump also referenced Greenland during his remarks. Media reports have noted that Trump previously shared altered imagery depicting Canada and Greenland as part of the United States.
Carney’s office said it did not plan to comment on Trump’s remarks, Reuters said
