President Donald Trump said on Thursday, April 2, 2026, that he had removed Attorney General Pam Bondi from office and placed Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in charge of the Justice Department on an acting basis, marking a fresh shake-up inside one of the most sensitive institutions in Washington.
The move comes as Bondi had been facing growing political and legal pressure amid broad scrutiny of her tenure, including criticism tied to the handling of Jeffrey Epstein-related files and other controversial Justice Department matters. As of publication, the administration had not announced a permanent replacement.
Blanche, who had been serving as deputy attorney general, is also a lawyer who previously represented Trump, making his elevation to the top Justice Department role an immediate focus of political and legal attention in Washington.
Bondi’s dismissal opens a new chapter at the Justice Department at a time when questions are intensifying over the administration’s direction in major legal and political cases, and over whether the change signals a broader restructuring in the department’s leadership in the weeks ahead.
