Reuters, citing a source familiar with the matter, reported that President Donald Trump offered to lift a freeze on federal funding for the $16 billion Gateway Hudson River tunnel project if Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer backed renaming Washington Dulles International Airport and New York’s Penn Station after Trump.
The source said Schumer rejected the proposal, noting he had no authority to rename the landmarks, while the White House did not immediately comment, Reuters added.
The dispute unfolded as project officials warned the funding hold could force construction to pause, putting jobs at risk and disrupting a critical rail corridor linking New York and New Jersey.
ABC News and Axios separately reported the alleged offer and the political backlash it triggered among Democrats.
