Trump Halts Major Iran Strike and Announces Monday Negotiations

U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington would begin negotiations with Iran on the afternoon of Monday, August 3, 2026, after he decided to suspend a major military attack that had been planned against Tehran.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday evening, Trump said the United States was communicating with Iran about the format of the negotiations. He did not identify the location or participants and declined to set a deadline for reaching an agreement, saying he preferred diplomacy and wanted to avoid further casualties.
Trump claimed that the suspended military operation would have been the largest attack since the Second World War. He said Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, as well as unnamed Iranian officials, had urged him to allow more time for diplomatic efforts.
According to Trump, the expected talks will focus on fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing U.S. concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear program. However, no final agreement has been announced, and Tehran has not formally endorsed the terms described by the U.S. president.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran’s discussions with Oman concern a proposed new shipping route through the strait and are separate from the question of whether the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened. Iranian officials have also disputed Trump’s assertion that Tehran requested the cancellation of the planned attack.
The announcement marks a temporary shift from threats of military escalation toward renewed diplomacy. However, significant disagreements over navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear activities remain unresolved, leaving the outcome of Monday’s talks uncertain.
