U.S. President Donald Trump said he is reviewing a new Iranian proposal aimed at ending the confrontation, but he expressed clear doubts about whether it could be accepted, keeping the possibility of renewed military action on the table.
The proposal, reported by Reuters, would reopen shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and end the U.S. blockade on Iran, while postponing talks on Iran’s nuclear program to a later stage. That sequencing appears to be one of Washington’s main concerns, as Trump has insisted that any deal must address Iran’s nuclear ambitions directly.
Tehran is trying to move the crisis from a temporary pause in fighting to a broader diplomatic framework. But the terms reportedly include demands that go beyond the immediate battlefield, including sanctions relief, U.S. military withdrawal from the region, and new arrangements over the Strait of Hormuz.
The stakes are global. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes, and any prolonged disruption could push up oil prices, gasoline costs, and inflation far beyond the Middle East, including in Canada.
Although Trump said he prefers a non-military path, his warning that strikes could resume if Iran “misbehaves” leaves the situation highly unstable. The Iranian proposal now becomes a test of whether diplomacy can contain the crisis, or whether the region is heading back toward a wider military confrontation.
