U.S. President Donald Trump said ending the ongoing war with Iran will not be a unilateral American decision, but one made in coordination with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to a phone interview published on March 9, 2026.
Trump said the decision to stop the war would be a “mutual” one with Netanyahu, adding that he would make the call when he believes the timing is right. The remarks came as the conflict continued and concern grew over the risk of a wider regional spillover.
Days earlier, on March 5, Trump said the United States should have a role in choosing Iran’s next leader after the killing of Ali Khamenei, adding that Mojtaba Khamenei, the late supreme leader’s son, was not his preferred option.
On March 8, Reuters reported that Iran had named Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new supreme leader, adding a new political dimension to the war and placing Tehran on a course that differed from the position Trump had publicly expressed.
