Trump signals he may delay the Gordie Howe bridge opening as Canada-U.S. trade tensions flare

U.S. President Donald Trump said he could block or delay the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge linking Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan, calling for negotiations with Canada and arguing the U.S. should receive compensation and an ownership stake.
Reuters reported Trump tied his stance to broader trade disputes, including dairy and other bilateral irritants, while AP noted he also raised concerns about materials used on the project. The Canadian-financed crossing is expected to open in early 2026 and is designed to ease congestion at existing crossings and support the busiest Canada-U.S. freight corridor.
Michigan officials warned any delay would harm jobs and supply chains; Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office said the bridge will open given its economic importance.
