Tulsi Gabbard has officially announced her resignation as U.S. Director of National Intelligence, effective June 30, 2026, ending a turbulent 15-month tenure in one of Washington’s most sensitive national security roles. Gabbard said she was stepping down to support her husband, Abraham Williams, after his diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer.
The Director of National Intelligence oversees coordination across 18 U.S. intelligence agencies, making the departure more than a routine personnel change at a time when Washington is dealing with Iran, Russia, China and domestic security pressures.
President Donald Trump praised Gabbard’s service after the announcement, while her principal deputy, Aaron Lukas, is expected to serve as acting Director of National Intelligence after her departure.
Gabbard’s resignation also carries political weight. A former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii and Iraq War veteran, she later became a Trump supporter and one of the most unconventional figures in his national security team. Her appointment drew criticism over her foreign policy views, her opposition to U.S. military interventions and questions about the independence of intelligence leadership from politics.
Although Gabbard cited family reasons for her resignation, U.S. reports also pointed to repeated tensions with the White House, including disagreements tied to Iran and the management of the intelligence community. Still, the official reason she gave was her need to stand by her husband during his treatment.
