US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has removed Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, according to US media reports cited on Thursday, in a move affecting one of the most senior positions in the US Army.
Reuters, citing American media outlets, reported that George is being pushed into retirement, while Gen. Christopher LaNeve is expected to take over the role on an acting basis.
The move comes as the Pentagon continues to undergo changes at the senior leadership level, although the department has not publicly provided a detailed official explanation for the decision in the statements currently available.
The Army chief of staff role is a central position within the US military establishment, giving the decision significance beyond a routine administrative reshuffle, especially as Washington remains engaged in multiple active security and military files.
With no fuller public explanation yet released, the decision is likely to draw continued attention over the direction of US military leadership in the current phase.
