The City of Vancouver says it will temporarily close a key stretch of Granville Street in the downtown core and convert it into a pedestrian-only zone during the FIFA World Cup 2026. The closure will run from June 11 to July 20, 2026, covering the section between Georgia Street and Davie Street.
City officials say the goal is to create an open, walkable public space for residents and visitors while boosting activity for businesses in the Granville Entertainment District. Downtown Van will oversee programming and activations to bring the corridor to life during the pedestrian-zone period, according to the city.
The city says the area will feature added public seating and expanded patios, vendors and food options, live music and cultural activations, plus placemaking elements and photo spots.
For transportation, the city says cross streets including Robson, Smithe, Nelson, and Helmcken will remain open to vehicle traffic, and emergency access will be maintained at all times. TransLink bus routes that normally operate on Granville Street will be rerouted to Seymour Street and Howe Street, supported by new bus lanes for the duration of the changes.
Setup is expected to begin in the first week of June, and the street will fully reopen to vehicles after the pedestrian-zone period ends, the city said.
