Winter Storm Fern swept across a large swath of the United States with heavy snow, sleet, freezing rain and an Arctic cold blast expected to linger for days, keeping roads hazardous and straining infrastructure.
Louisiana officials reported two deaths linked to hypothermia. New York City’s mayor said five bodies were found outdoors over the weekend, while noting authorities had not confirmed the deaths were weather-related.
Air travel was severely hit. Reagan National Airport near Washington was effectively closed, while major hubs across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic saw widespread cancellations. The US logged more than 11,000 flight cancellations on Sunday, followed by roughly 3,800 more by early Monday, with regulators warning of possible ground stops at key airports if conditions worsen.
Power outages spread across parts of the South as ice buildup downed trees and lines. Outages peaked above one million customers across multiple states, with more than 820,000 still without electricity early Monday, according to outage trackers cited in agency reports
