Ticket prices for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are becoming a major source of frustration for fans before the tournament even begins, with some seats costing hundreds of dollars and resale listings for the final reaching eye-watering figures.

In Canada, fans looking at matches in Vancouver and Toronto have found that even lower-category tickets for high-demand games can approach several hundred dollars, while better seats can climb much higher. For many families, attending a World Cup match is no longer just a sports decision, but a major financial calculation.

The biggest shock has come from the World Cup final in the New York/New Jersey area. ESPN reported that four tickets appeared on FIFA’s official resale platform for just under US$2.3 million each, with the seats listed at US$2,299,998.85 per ticket.

The controversy is not limited to the final. Reports have pointed to the impact of dynamic pricing, with some premium final tickets climbing sharply as demand changes. The Sun reported that some high-end tickets for the final reached about US$32,970, sparking anger among fans who say the tournament is becoming unaffordable.

Canada is set to host 13 matches in total, six in Toronto and seven in Vancouver. A Parliamentary Budget Officer report estimated that Canada’s cost of hosting the tournament could exceed C$1 billion, including spending by federal, provincial and municipal governments.

For fans, the real cost goes far beyond the ticket. Hotels, transportation, service fees, food and travel can turn one match into a very expensive trip. Consumer warnings have also increased as scammers target fans through fake websites, social media offers and suspicious resale links.

Experts advise fans to buy only through official FIFA channels or verified resale platforms, avoid social media sellers, use credit cards for added protection, and never send money through direct transfers to unknown sellers.

The 2026 World Cup is expected to be one of the largest sporting events ever held in North America. But the debate over ticket prices is raising a difficult question: is the world’s biggest football tournament still a people’s celebration, or is it becoming a luxury event for those who can afford the rising cost?
