Musk’s remarks came in response to media reports indicating that X’s AI chatbot, Grok, has in some cases been able to generate sexually explicit manipulated images of real individuals, including minors, based on user prompts. The reports have prompted widespread criticism and renewed calls for stricter oversight of the platform.
According to reports by Reuters and British media outlets, UK authorities are assessing potential enforcement measures against X should it be found in breach of the country’s online safety laws, particularly those aimed at protecting children and preventing the creation or distribution of non-consensual sexual imagery.
The British government has voiced support for communications regulator Ofcom if it decides to take firm action against the platform, including the possibility of restrictions or a ban, should legal violations be confirmed. UK technology officials have described the sexual manipulation of images involving women and children through AI as unacceptable and dangerous.
Under British law, the creation or sharing of intimate images without consent, as well as any material involving the sexual abuse of children — including AI-generated images — constitutes a criminal offence, even in cases where explicit sexual activity is not depicted.
The dispute comes amid growing international pressure on major technology companies to strengthen ethical and legal safeguards around artificial intelligence tools, amid concerns over their misuse in producing harmful or illegal content.
