Axios: U.S. Rejects Iran’s Request to Alter Format or Venue of Friday Talks Amid Growing Speculation of Muscat Meeting

The United States has reportedly informed Iran that it will not accept any changes to the proposed format or venue of upcoming talks, according to U.S. officials quoted by Axios on Tuesday. The discussions—likely to take place on Friday—come amid mounting diplomatic activity aimed at de-escalating tensions between the two countries.
Diplomatic sources suggest that the talks may be held in Muscat, Oman, a country known for its discreet and neutral mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran. Oman previously played a key role in facilitating backchannel communications that paved the way for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
The timing of this renewed effort is particularly sensitive, as tensions have recently surged in the Gulf following military incidents and ongoing political instability in Iran.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump, currently gearing up for a potential return to the White House, told American media he is open to negotiating with Iran, expressing his desire to secure a "stronger and better" agreement than the 2015 accord if re-elected.
Although neither side has officially confirmed the time or framework of the proposed negotiations, multiple indicators point to Muscat emerging once again as a central stage for quiet diplomacy in the region.
