Can adults be “addicted” to social media? Signs of compulsive use and practical ways to cut back

The phrase “social media addiction” is widely used, but clinicians still debate the label. Major diagnostic manuals do not currently include a formal diagnosis called “social media addiction,” which is why many experts prefer terms like problematic or compulsive use.
That debate does not negate a real pattern some adults experience: loss of control, rising priority over sleep, work, or relationships, and continued use despite clear negative impact. The closest officially recognized model in ICD 11 is WHO’s Gaming Disorder, defined by impaired control and persistence despite harm, but it applies to gaming rather than social media.
Common signs of compulsive use in adults:
-
Automatic checking with no clear purpose, and losing track of time
-
Repeated failed attempts to cut back
-
Strong urges to check during boredom, anxiety, or stress
-
Irritability when access is limited
-
Sleep or focus disruption and procrastination
-
Using feeds to escape difficult emotions
-
Clear harm to work or relationships, yet the behavior continues
Practical ways to break the endless scroll:
-
Reduce triggers: silence non essential notifications, move apps off your home screen
-
Add friction: log out, use passwords, or create extra steps to open apps
-
Time windows: short, scheduled check ins with a visible timer
-
One purpose rule: open for one task, then exit
-
Replace the urge: a one minute breathing reset, water, a two minute walk, or texting a friend
-
Track the “why”: note when spikes happen and address the driver, not just the hours
When to seek help:
If technology use is causing meaningful harm and you cannot reduce it despite repeated attempts, professional support may help. CAMH describes problem technology use as an umbrella that can include social media when linked to real life biopsychosocial harms.
Canada crisis support:
