Canada Child Benefit to Change in July: What Families Need to Know

Families across Canada may see a change in their Canada Child Benefit payments starting in July, as the Canada Revenue Agency begins a new benefit year and recalculates payments based on the previous year’s tax information.
The CRA says the 2026 payment schedule is split by tax year: payments from January to June 2026 are based on 2024 tax information, while payments from July to December 2026 are based on 2025 tax information. The July payment is scheduled for July 20, 2026.
The change means some families may receive a higher or lower monthly amount, depending on their adjusted family net income, number of eligible children, children’s ages, marital status, and custody arrangements.
As of July 2026, eligible families may receive up to $8,157 per year for each child under 6, and up to $6,883 per year for each child aged 6 to 17. These amounts depend on income and eligibility.
The CRA reminds families that they must file their tax return every year to keep receiving benefit payments. If a person has a spouse or common-law partner, that partner must also file a tax return, even if there was no income to report. Filing late may interrupt monthly payments.
Some families may also qualify for related benefits, including the Child Disability Benefit. For the July 2025 to June 2026 period, the amount was up to $3,411 per year, and the CRA automatically adds it to the Canada Child Benefit payment for eligible children.
Families are advised to review their CRA account in July, check the new benefit notice, and make sure their address, direct deposit information, marital status, and custody details are up to date.
