Major Changes in Canada Immigration Processing Times in May

Canada’s latest immigration processing time updates for May 2026 show a mixed picture, with some files moving faster while others are facing longer delays. The changes affect applicants for citizenship, permanent residence, family sponsorship, visitor visas, study permits, work permits, and permanent resident cards.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says processing times are not guaranteed deadlines. They vary depending on the type of application, whether the file is complete, the size of the application inventory, available processing capacity, how easily information can be verified, and how quickly applicants respond to requests. IRCC also says files may take longer if they are incomplete, complex, require extra security review, or if the annual cap for a program has been reached.
According to a May 2026 analysis by Immigration News Canada, based on IRCC’s published figures, monthly categories such as citizenship and permanent residence were refreshed on May 12, while weekly categories including PR cards, visitor visas, study permits, and work permits were last updated on May 20, 2026.
Citizenship processing has seen new pressure. Citizenship grants rose to 13 months, one month longer than April, while citizenship certificates increased to 12 months, up two months. The citizenship grant queue climbed to about 321,100 people, while the citizenship certificate queue rose to roughly 70,400 people.
Permanent resident cards remain among the faster parts of the system. New PR cards are currently listed at about 40 days, while PR card renewals are listed at 28 days. That makes PR cards one of the better-performing categories compared with family sponsorship and several permanent residence streams.
Family sponsorship saw new upward pressure in spousal files. Outland spousal sponsorship for non-Quebec destinations rose to 16 months, up one month, while inland spousal sponsorship outside Quebec reached 25 months, also up one month. Parents and grandparents sponsorship outside Quebec improved to 33 months, while the Quebec stream remains much longer at 66 months, despite a one-month decrease.
Humanitarian and compassionate applications remain among the longest waits in Canada’s immigration system, with both Quebec and non-Quebec streams still listed at more than 10 years. Protected persons in Quebec rose to about 117 months, or nearly nine years and nine months.
In economic immigration, the Canadian Experience Class remained at seven months, but the number of people waiting continued to grow. The Federal Skilled Worker Program rose to seven months, up one month, while non-Express Entry Provincial Nominee Program applications rose to 14 months. The Atlantic Immigration Program saw one of the most noticeable jumps, reaching 38 months, up seven months from April.
Temporary residence files show a different pattern. Super visa processing improved sharply in several countries, with India dropping to 117 days, down 97 days compared with the January baseline. But visitor record extensions have become a major concern, reaching 315 days, up 154 days since late January.
Study and work permit files were mixed. Inland study permits are listed at six weeks, while study permit extensions fell to 63 days. Inland work permits, including extensions, dropped to 206 days after a steady improvement since late March.
IRCC says processing times can also be affected by Canada’s Immigration Levels Plan, which sets how many newcomers the country plans to welcome each year. When applications exceed annual admission space or processing capacity, some files may remain in inventory longer.
For applicants, the key message is that processing times should be treated as moving indicators, not fixed promises. Applicants should check their IRCC accounts regularly, respond quickly to requests, and make sure their documents are complete, because missing information or complex files can push an application beyond the posted timeline.
