Canada lost 2-1 to Switzerland on Wednesday at BC Place in Vancouver in its final Group B match at the 2026 World Cup. The result gives Switzerland the edge in the race for first place in the group, while Canada remains part of the knockout-stage picture after a strong start to the tournament.
After a goalless first half, Switzerland struck quickly after the restart through Ruben Vargas, then doubled the lead through Johan Manzambi in the 57th minute. Canada responded in the 76th minute through Promise David, but the late goal was not enough to rescue a draw.
The match carried major implications for Canada’s path in the tournament. A win or draw would have helped Canada keep first place and remain on a Vancouver route for the next round, while the defeat may now force the co-hosts to move away from BC Place in the Round of 32, pending the final official knockout schedule.
Before kickoff, Vancouver was filled with Canadian fans dressed in red and white, as thousands marched through the city in support of the national team. The scenes reflected the growing football atmosphere around Canada’s historic World Cup campaign.
The loss comes days after Canada’s historic 6-0 win over Qatar, its first-ever men’s World Cup victory. That match was also overshadowed by the serious leg injury suffered by Ismaël Koné, with FIFA later handing Qatar’s Assim Madibo a five-match suspension for the tackle.
