Canada Warns of World Cup Ticket Fraud

Canada’s Competition Bureau is warning fans to stay alert when buying tickets for major events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying the busy summer season creates opportunities for deceptive sellers to take advantage of consumers eager to secure seats.

In an official alert published on May 20, 2026, the Bureau said ticket buyers should watch for sellers pretending to be official or authorized platforms, fake websites, sponsored ads that closely resemble legitimate sources, and prices that do not show mandatory fees until later in the purchase process.

The warning also highlights high-pressure tactics, including countdown timers and messages claiming that only a few tickets remain. While some urgency cues may be genuine, the Bureau says they can also be exaggerated or false to rush consumers into buying.

The Bureau advises buyers to purchase tickets through trusted sources, such as the event organizer, the venue, or a reputable ticketing platform. Fans using the secondary market should choose platforms that offer buyer protection and avoid sellers demanding unusual or hard-to-trace payment methods, including gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency.

Consumers are also urged to pay with protected methods such as credit cards and to keep confirmation emails, receipts and screenshots in case they need to dispute a charge or file a complaint
