Quebec has entered a new political chapter after Christine Fréchette won the leadership of the governing Coalition Avenir Québec, positioning her to succeed François Legault as the province’s next premier. Her victory on Sunday, April 12, 2026, came after an internal leadership race against Bernard Drainville, giving the party a new face ahead of a high-stakes electoral season.

Fréchette won 57.9 per cent of the vote, with about 15,800 party members casting ballots. The result makes her the first woman to lead the CAQ and only the second woman to become premier of Quebec, after Pauline Marois.

She is expected to be sworn in before the National Assembly resumes on May 5, becoming Quebec’s 33rd premier. The transition gives the governing party a chance to reset after a difficult period, even as polling points to a tougher political road ahead.

In her victory speech, Fréchette framed herself as a consensus-building leader and said Quebecers deserve a government that makes life easier. She pledged to focus on affordability, the economy, hydroelectricity, natural resources, technology, culture and the protection of the French language.

Her win matters not only because of the symbolic leadership change, but because it comes at a moment when the CAQ is trying to recover political ground before Quebec’s next provincial election on October 5. Fréchette now faces immediate pressure to convince voters that a new leader can also mean a new governing approach on cost of living, immigration, housing and health care.
