Federal dental plan renewals open today in Canada, June 1 deadline and tax filing is essential

The federal government opened renewals today, Wednesday, April 15, 2026, for the Canadian Dental Care Plan for the 2026-2027 benefit year, with the renewal window running until June 1, 2026. Current coverage remains active only until June 30, 2026. Members who miss the deadline will lose coverage after that date and will have to submit a new application later, which may result in a gap during which dental services will not be covered or reimbursed retroactively.

The government is also stressing that filing an income tax return is not just routine paperwork. It is essential for staying eligible for income tested programs and services. For current dental plan members, renewal this year can only be completed after filing the 2025 Income Tax and Benefit Return and receiving the 2025 Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Members can renew through My Service Canada Account, and Service Canada also offers phone renewal for those who cannot use the online system. As part of the renewal process, members must re attest that they do not have access to private dental insurance, that their adjusted family net income is below $90,000, and that they are Canadian residents for tax purposes.

The practical message is simple: anyone relying on the plan should not wait until the last minute. A delay in tax filing or renewal could directly affect continued coverage. The government has also said that new applications, as well as applications from people who missed the renewal deadline, will open on June 2, 2026.
