Google Reshapes AI Leadership as Hassabis Leaves DeepMind’s Daily Management

Alphabet has reorganized its artificial intelligence leadership, with Demis Hassabis stepping down as chief executive of Google DeepMind and moving into two roles focused on research and long-term strategy.
Hassabis will become Alphabet’s chief scientist and chair of DeepMind, but he is not leaving the company. Chief technology officer Koray Kavukcuoglu will assume day-to-day control of the unit as a senior vice-president while continuing as Alphabet’s chief AI architect.
Hassabis told employees that the change would give him more time to focus on artificial general intelligence, a theoretical stage at which systems could perform a broad range of cognitive tasks at or near human capability. Alphabet chief executive Sundar Pichai said the new role was designed to let Hassabis concentrate on the technology’s future and wider impact.
The move does not mean Hassabis is withdrawing from DeepMind or abandoning its scientific direction. Kavukcuoglu will take over daily operations, while Hassabis retains strategic and research oversight. He will also remain chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, the AI drug-discovery company spun out of DeepMind.
The restructuring coincided with the departure of several prominent Google AI engineers, including Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le. They are launching Discovery Loop, a company focused on machine-learning, science and engineering research. Google will invest in the new venture and provide cloud computing capacity.
The changes come as Google faces intensifying competition from OpenAI and Anthropic in advanced models and commercial AI products. Alphabet shares fell about 4% after the announcement amid investor concern over senior departures and delays affecting parts of the Gemini programme.
In practical terms, Google has separated DeepMind’s daily management from its longer-term scientific leadership. Kavukcuoglu will oversee execution and products, while Hassabis focuses on AGI research, strategy and scientific applications
