14, 2026, escalating a long-running labour dispute inside one of Canada’s most important public energy utilities.

The strike involves about 2,700 members of the Syndicat des technologues d’Hydro-Québec, affiliated with the Canadian Union of Public Employees. The union filed its strike notice earlier in May, saying the move is intended to increase pressure in negotiations after more than two years of slow talks.

The dispute centres on workplace flexibility sought by management and union concerns over the use of external contractors. The union argues that growing reliance on subcontracting could weaken in-house expertise and increase operating costs.

The job action does not mean a full shutdown of electricity services. It takes the form of a refusal to work overtime, while essential services remain in place. Quebec’s Tribunal administratif du travail has ruled that the agreed essential services are sufficient to ensure the health and safety of the public are not put at risk during the overtime strike.

The dispute comes at a sensitive time for Quebec’s energy sector, as Hydro-Québec continues to plan major grid work and long-term electricity expansion. Union representatives have warned that refusing overtime could affect some maintenance work or projects if regular operations depend heavily on extra hours.

For residents, the key point is that emergency and outage-related services are expected to continue under the essential-services framework. Still, the dispute places fresh pressure on Hydro-Québec at a time when electricity reliability, infrastructure planning, and labour capacity are central public concerns.
